FASU Games: UNILAG Secures Double Gold in Athletics, Ghana Dominates
At the 11th All-Africa University Games on Thursday, Team UNILAG's women's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams secured gold in both events. However, it was three of the five Ghanaian universities participating that dominated the other competitions.
In the women's relays, UNILAG was far ahead of its local competitors, Lagos State University and Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Ikorodu, securing gold, silver, and bronze, respectively, in both the 4x100m and 4x400m events.
In the men's 4x100m relay, Ghanaian universities made a strong impression, with the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and University for Development Studies taking the gold, silver, and bronze medals, respectively. The race featured seven universities, including co-hosts UNILAG, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, and UNIJOS.
Ghana's dominance continued as Kwame Nkrumah University's Janet Mensah claimed double gold in the women's 100m and 200m events. She won the 100m in 12.18 seconds, followed by Zaineb Awuni of UNICAP (12.36 seconds) and Morenikeji Suleimon of Federal University Oye-Ekiti (12.38 seconds) for silver and bronze. In the 200m, Mensah secured another gold with a time of 25.22 seconds, while Suleimon and Awuni switched places for silver and bronze.
In the men's 100m, Aremu Adeyemi of FUOYE won gold with a time of 10.70 seconds. Williams Kwaku of the University of Ghana claimed gold in the men's 200m, with his teammates Nathaniel Keyeremateng and Moses Mbila taking second and third place.
