Omolayo clinches silver in powerlifting

Nigeria is eager to secure additional medals in powerlifting on the final day of the 2024 Paralympics today, following their success on Saturday which saw their total in the event reach three medals, highlighted by Bose Omolayo’s silver in the women’s 79 kg category.

Omolayo, who previously won gold in the same category at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, lifted an impressive 145 kg to earn the silver medal. The gold went to China’s Han Miayou, who set a new world record with a 154 kg lift, while Egypt’s Safaa Hassan took the bronze with a 139 kg lift.

In Paris, Nigeria has already secured one gold and two silver medals in para-powerlifting, alongside three additional medals in para-athletics, para-table tennis, and para-badminton. Powerlifting remains the country’s most successful event at the Games, with a total of 24 gold, 16 silver, and 14 bronze medals accumulated before the Paris 2024 Games.

Nigeria will look to add to their medal tally today as Tokyo 2020 gold medallist and Commonwealth Games champion Folashade Olwafemiayo and Loveline Obiji compete in the women’s +86kg and 86kg categories, respectively. Obiji, a two-time Paralympic medallist, previously won silver in Tokyo 2020 and gold in London 2016.
