Team Nigeria concludes their least successful Paralympics with a total of seven medals.
Team Nigeria's performance at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, which concluded on Sunday, resulted in their lowest medal tally ever at the event, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The Nigerian team secured seven medals overall—two gold, three silver, and two bronze—finishing in 40th place.
On the final day, Folashade Oluwafemiayo made headlines by breaking her own world record in the women’s over 86 kg para-powerlifting category, lifting 166 kg and earning a gold medal. This performance brought Nigeria's total medal count to seven.
Earlier in the competition, Nigeria had already secured three additional medals: Isau Ogunkunle won bronze in para-table tennis, Bose Omolayo claimed silver in para-powerlifting, and Flora Ugwunwa took silver in women’s javelin.
Ogunkunle's bronze in Men’s Singles Class 4 Para Table Tennis marked Nigeria’s first individual medal since the Sydney 2000 Games. Omolayo achieved silver with a lift of 145 kg in the Women’s 79kg Para Powerlifting category. Ugwunwa's throw of 19.26 meters earned her silver in the Women’s Javelin F54.
Prior to these achievements, Nigeria had won three medals from powerlifting, para-table tennis, and para-badminton. Onyinyechi Mark’s gold in the women’s 61 kg powerlifting was Nigeria’s first gold of the Games. Oluwafemiayo’s performance on the final day further bolstered the medal tally, though it fell short compared to previous Paralympic performances.
Historically, Nigeria’s best performances came in Rio 2016, with eight gold, two silver, and two bronze medals, and Sydney 2000, with seven gold, one silver, and five bronze medals. The team’s performance in Paris 2024, with only two gold medals, is the lowest since their debut in Barcelona in 1992.
