Former Monaco captain Ben Yedder in court over assault allegations.
Former France international footballer Wissam Ben Yedder stood trial on Tuesday in Nice, southern France, for alleged sexual assault. The incident reportedly took place last month, involving a woman he met during a night out.
According to the investigation, the 34-year-old invited the woman into his car, where he allegedly engaged in a sexual act in her presence. The woman promptly filed a police complaint, leading to Ben Yedder’s arrest later that night. His lawyers, Hasna Louze and Marie Roumiantseva, indicated that their client feels remorseful and is willing to accept responsibility for his actions.
Currently without a club and battling alcoholism, Ben Yedder faces a potential maximum sentence of 10 years in prison if convicted. The former captain of AS Monaco, the club's second-highest goalscorer, has been under strict police supervision while awaiting trial, though he is not in custody.
This is not Ben Yedder’s only legal issue; he is set to face another trial in December for charges of psychological violence against his wife amid ongoing divorce proceedings. Additionally, police are investigating a separate allegation of rape from summer 2023, which he denies.
Ben Yedder began his professional career at Toulouse before moving to FC Sevilla. In 2023, a Spanish court convicted him of tax fraud during his time in Spain, resulting in a six-month suspended sentence. His contract with AS Monaco, where he scored 118 goals in 201 appearances, was not renewed when it expired this year. He also represented the French national team, scoring three goals in 19 appearances.
