The Minister of Sports, Sen. John Owan-Enoh, along with other top government officials, is set to participate in today's ceremonial tee-off of the 2024 IBB Independence Cup tournament.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the week-long event, which began on September 24 at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja, concludes today.
Club Captain Ibrahim Babayo informed NAN that preparations are complete for the grand finale of the tournament, which was won last year by Nigerian golfer Philip Poroma. Babayo explained that the annual event is held to commemorate Nigeria's independence, with participation from five countries, including Ghana, Cameroon, Uganda, Rwanda, and host country Nigeria.
The week-long Nigeria @ 64 Independence golf tournament will culminate today, with over 250 golfers competing in the 18-hole final.
Babayo also highlighted the various competitions held over the past six days, including events for staff and caddies, ladies with a handicap of 28 and above, men's handicap 19 and above, and veterans and super veterans categories.
He added that today's final will feature club members with handicaps between 0 and 10, competing for the prestigious Independence anniversary trophy. In addition to celebrating Nigeria's independence, the matchplay event between invited countries aims to promote a positive image of the country globally.
