South Africa and Congo Split Points in AFCON Qualifier Match
South Africa's Bafana Bafana played to a 1-1 draw against Congo in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Tuesday evening at the Alphonse Massemba-Debat Stadium in Brazzaville. Elias Mokwana scored for South Africa, while Mons Bassouamina equalised for the hosts.
This result leaves South Africa in a strong position in Group K, currently sitting second behind Uganda and four points clear of third-placed Congo. Bafana Bafana are close to qualifying for the continental finals in Morocco next year, with a win in either of their remaining two qualifiers in November ensuring their spot in the tournament.
South Africa started the match strongly, creating several chances. Mokwana put the visitors ahead in the 33rd minute, but Bassouamina equalised for Congo just before halftime. In the second half, both teams sought a winner, with Congo applying pressure while South Africa regained control as the match wore on.
South Africa’s performance suggests they are preparing well for the upcoming AFCON tournament, though the injury to key player Themba Zwane, who was substituted in the 40th minute, may pose a challenge for the team.
Looking ahead, both teams will resume their Group K campaigns in November 2024, with these matches being pivotal in determining the final standings and the teams that will qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
