Lobi Stars appoint Finnish coach Mika Lönnström as their new head coach
Lobi Stars have appointed Finnish coach Mika Lönnström as their new head coach. The club announced his arrival in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.
Lönnström, who holds a UEFA Pro Licence, will work alongside Daniel Amokachi, recently named Lobi's technical adviser. He takes over following the dismissal of Eugene Agagbe after Lobi Stars' challenging start to the NPFL season.
Lönnström attended the team’s training on Saturday and is expected to lead from the dugout against Remo Stars in Ikenne on Sunday.
The 50-year-old began his coaching career at 16 and managed Finland’s Myllykosken Pallo-47 from 2005 to 2011. In 2012, he became the director at Thailand’s Roi Et Academy and was later promoted to manage Roi Et United, leading them to victory in the 2013 regional league.
In 2014, he briefly served as assistant coach for Thailand’s U-16 national team before taking over as manager of Police United FC. Lönnström also has experience coaching in the Maldives and most recently served as sporting director for Finnish second-division club HIFK Fotboll Ab.
Lobi Stars currently sit 17th in the NPFL standings, with two wins from nine games and a total of nine points out of a possible 27.
